Leaving and allowing yourself to be guided through an unknown country means you already have the soul of an explorer. Excessive Googling can make you lose it just as quickly. Keeping this instinct for discovery is the prerogative of the great navigators who, with childlike eyes, saw continents for the first time. That's what we offer you at L'Esprit M, with Joao-Filipe at the helm.
Along the way, you may take an impromptu break in a mountain café, where you'll have the honor of chatting with complete strangers, and you'll remember it for a long time. In the evening, over tasty sardines, you'll recount the day's 1001 turns and remember them all. You'll remember that stop at a café racer tuner. We're passionate about motorcycling, and what could be more exciting than sharing it with others? You'll long remember going from the sea to the roof of Portugal via endless switchbacks, not without tasting a Porto far removed from supermarket labels. Finally, you'll long remember all those new visions, tinged with the blue of the azulejos along the way.
Maybe you'll even want to come back more often, like the famous Saudades that are so deeply rooted in the hearts of all Portuguese emigrants.
After getting off the plane, where the bikes are waiting for us, we'll stop off at a café for a coffee and a pasteis de nata. A first stage of just under 200 kilometers to familiarize ourselves with the bikes, on simple roads along the coast to Sagres. Our first meal on the southernmost point, overlooking the Atlantic and sipping a good local beer, La Sagres.
We'll be back on the road, heading for the Serra (forest and mountain range) of Monchique. Here, we'll enjoy winding roads and breathtaking views of the Algarve's 900-meter-high roof, before finishing our day in a hotel with equally breathtaking views.
Our navigation, still between land and sea, will see us using our machines on some very twisty stretches, with contemplative stops on the various peaks of this serra. The view of the sea is so captivating that we never tire of it. We join it for a meal at its closest edge.
We then cross a city emblematic of Portugal's history, which put an end to Salazar's regime. A well-deserved rest on the Comporta peninsula, where you can sip a drink on the beach in the evening.
We'll take a ferry across the Setubal estuary. Once in Setubal, we'll show you a place that represents both discoveries and Portuguese art, with its famous azulejos.
Our epic will retrace some of Portugal's historic moments, and will also take us back to the days of great explorers like Vasco de Gama. We'll stop off in Portuguese Corsica, with its last protected scrubland, in the United States, crossing the twin bridges of San Francisco, in Brazil, with the twin Christs of Mount Corcovado, and finally at the Belem Tower, guardian of the Tagus port on the banks of the Tagus. We finish our round-the-world trip in Torres Vedras.
Before heading a little further inland and realizing that, like Corsica, Portugal is also a country of mountain dwellers, we stop off at Nazaré. Once an emblematic fishing port, it is now renowned for its waves reaching building heights. This is the season for the first autumn swells, and you'll be thrilled to taste some of Portugal's best sardines.
Serta is the gateway to the higher mountains. The roads have nothing to envy our French counterparts, with endless curves and no one to disturb your ascent. Motorcycles and their riders will be put to the test. Yet another challenge for the great explorer in you.
With the roof of Portugal in your sights, at 2000 metres, it can be cold at this time of year, but nothing to put off bikers looking for new adventures. At the same time, you'll discover Portugal, where I'm from. We'll even stop for a coffee in my childhood village!
This day will take us to a café racer workshop, where the owners will be delighted to show you their creations while sipping a glass in their workshop.
But a visit to Portugal would be inconceivable without tasting a fine Port wine from a renowned winery on the banks of the Douro, and perhaps even bringing some back in your suitcases.
We'll end our stay here in Porto, but I'm sure you'll be back to see other facets of Portugal, as this country has plenty to offer.
