Who is Elie, the artist behind Metèque ? Here's how he describes his work:
“J’ai commencé la bijouterie de l’autre côté de la Méditerranée, dans les ruelles poussiéreuses de Beyrouth. Mon père, sertisseur, m’a appris le métier, la patience, la précision. Mais dehors, c’était le chaos. Dans mes bagages, j’ai tout emporté: la rigueur et la méticulosité, et un goût insatiable pour le désordre et l’imperfection. Et toujours, en tête, ces images de métal plié, explosé, au cœur des immeubles détruits par la guerre.
Pendant longtemps, j’ai travaillé le jour dans la haute joaillerie. Je posais des pierres précieuses sur des pièces en or. La nuit, je travaillais le métal, loin des codes établis. Je l’ai martelé, maltraité, pour donner naissance à des bijoux sobres et bruts. Métèque a jailli de ces nuits de travail.
Après 15 ans à Paris, dont 5 à la tête de mon propre atelier, j’ai finalement repris le large. Je vis maintenant dans une ferme dans la Drôme, où je me consacre entièrement au bijou comme je l’aime : brut, et sur mesure, imaginé avec celles et ceux qui le porteront.
Métèque est le fruit d’années de travail manuel. Tous les bijoux que je propose sont travaillés à la main, et chaque finition est unique. Dans mon atelier, le chaos continue de créer.“
