Métèque (mé-tè-k') s. m.

Definition

In ancient Greece, a person who lived in a city of which he or she was not a native. - The metèque is highly respected in our city. ° (injur) Xenophobic term for a foreigner (especially of Mediterranean origin) whose physical appearance and attitude are deemed unpleasant. - This metèque thinks he's at home in my village.

Etymology

Lat. metoecus ; in Greek, the term is derived from étranger, which comes from a word indicating change, and another meaning house, dwelling.

Who is he?

" I started out as a jeweler on the other side of the Mediterranean, in the dusty backstreets of Beirut. My father, a gem-setter, taught me the trade, patience and precision. But outside, it was chaos. In my luggage, I took everything: rigor and meticulousness, and an insatiable taste for disorder and imperfection. And always in the back of my mind, these images of bent, exploded metal, in the heart of buildings destroyed by war.

For a long time, I worked in fine jewelry by day. I set precious stones on gold pieces. At night, I worked with metal, far from the established codes. I hammered it, abused it, to give birth to sober, raw jewelry. Métèque sprang from these nights of work.

After 15 years in Paris, 5 of which as head of my own workshop, I finally set sail again. I now live on a farm in the Drôme, where I devote myself entirely to jewelry as I like it: raw and made-to-measure, imagined with those who will wear it.

Métèque is the fruit of years of handwork. All the jewelry I offer is hand-worked, and each finish is unique. In my workshop, chaos continues to create. "

We discovered Métèque during a winter stroll through a Christmas market. It was love at first sight for the creations, raw, sometimes sober, sometimes flashy. And love at first sight for the man we met. Elie is cheerful, passionate, smiling, generous and accessible. He loves to share, to tell, to show every step of his creations and his know-how.

We're delighted to make room for it in the store, alongside other local and regional artisans. We're also delighted that this collection will be launched during our two-year anniversary weekend.

The Esprit M - Bar restaurant team will accompany you during the presentation of the L'Esprit Métèque jewelry collection. On the drinks side, you'll enjoy our local beers, local wines and house cocktails. The menu also includes carefully selected softs and house mocktails designed and created by our barman. And if you're feeling a bit peckish, you'll enjoy our famous platters of regional specialities (charcuterie, cheese, mixed, vegan). To finish on a sweet note, you can try our homemade brownie, if you feel like it!
