Divided between the Green Ardèche in the north and the warm and sunny southern Ardèche. No sign delimits these two Ardèches, but there is a natural border. Indeed: the culture, the gastronomy, the vegetation, the accents change as we advance in the department. Greenery, streams and cicadas, the south rubs shoulders with the green Massif Central.
Indeed, the high vivarais is also called the green Ardèche with its pine forests and chestnut farms. A little higher: the regional natural park of the Ardèche mountains. Land of altitude with volcanic rocks, here the vegetation is scarce and the temperatures lower. Its summit is the Mont Gerbier de Jonc (1551m) which is at the source of the river Loire.
There is no other way than down. Lost villages dot this mountainous territory, and the famous French singer and poet Jean Ferrat had found “in this land of wind, broom, heather” his haven of peace in the small village Antraigues sur Volane.
We continue our descent. We quickly find ourselves in Privas, a center of the exploitation of the “breadfruit tree” which provides its chestnuts then transformed into flour, candied chestnuts and chestnut creams. Considered as the gateway to the South by the ArdĂ©chois, Privas is also a former stronghold of Protestantism.
The lower Vivarais and southern Ardèche are a dazzling region under the warm light of the south. Here, the holm oaks shade the scrubland and the villages are built over the rivers. Crossed by the Ardèche river which has dug the famous gorges over time, this region offers us magnificent panoramas dotted with small villages of character. Balazuc, VogĂĽĂ©, Vallon Pont d’Arc, so many rare pearls that have made the reputation of the Ardèche.
Ideally placed between our 2 regions, Valence is the starting point for our road trips. Often recognized as a stage on the most important road axis in Europe, it should be noted that Valencia is actually much more than that. 2 hours from Paris by train and on the N7 and A7 highways, the DrĂ´me capital is easily accessible. Its pedestrian city center is beautifully highlighted and deserves a closer look. You can stroll through its streets and admire the Saint Apollinaire cathedral, the Pendant (one of the first historical monuments in France) or the Maison des TĂŞtes (House of Heads : former private mansion). For lovers of high gastronomy, the Maison Pic 3 stars in the Michelin guide is the best restaurant of the region.
The Drôme valley and the south of Montélimar offer a large variety of landscapes and colors. The yellow of the sunflowers, the purple of the lavenders passing by the blue of the sky and in the background the mountains and quiet villages, here is a beautiful picture! In the middle of the lavender fields is the small village of Grignan. It is famous for the charm of its castle and for the love that the romantic Marquise de Sévigné had for it. In the distance we can see the Baronnies natural park, a mid-mountain region straddling the Drôme and the Hautes Alpes. Dotted with lavender and olive trees as well as a few small perched villages, this region inspires peace and quiet.
Between Vercors and Provence, the Diois valley has made its nest in the bed of the river which gives its name to the region: the river DrĂ´me. At the entrance to the valley is Crest (pronounced crĂ©), guardian of the gates of Diois. Its 52m high keep is the highest in France. It bears witness to his warlike past. Further on, the small village of Saillans faces the majestic Trois Becs: a rocky peak overlooking the valley. Let’s go up the river to approach Die and its famous Clairette: a naturally sparkling wine. This sparkling and sweet wine is highly enjoyed after a day of motorcycling. Surrounded by cliffs, Die and its surroundings offer us a magnificent panorama. Here life is sweet and without surprises, the traveler is certainly welcomed simply, but always with a smile and with good a good meal.
First of all, the Vercors is a pre-Alpes mountain range, beteween Drôme and Isère. Rising like a barrier of white cliffs, it can seem intimidating and it is : this impregnable fortress remained isolated for centuries until the opening of roads, dug into the mountain in the 19th century. These bold and stubborn pioneers had to use pickaxes and dynamites to dig tunnels through the mountain. They created spectacular roads, on the side of cliffs.
A huge area of natural beauty, the fauna and flora are very diverse and its limestone rock offers a magnificent picture when it takes on the colors of the setting sun. Moreover, during heavy rains, waterfalls are born here and there, offering an ephemeral spectacle to the privileged. It is also an opportunity to learn more about the tragic events of Vassieux en Vercors in 1944 which saw the massacre of the population and the maquisards by the nazis.
The Vertacomicorians are very attached to their heritage. They are keen to share this macabre chapter of their history. Vassieux was also named a martyr village following this event.
To conclude, you will have understood that the Vercors has to be earned. But when conquered, the latter is not stingy with vertiginous and spectacular landscapes.
Every January we organize a road trip to Lans en Vercors to attend the E-TrophĂ©e Andros and AMV cup: the biggest ice race in the world. For more details on our road trip Les GivrĂ©s ! it’s this way.
